Year 4 Outdoor Maths

Year 4 maths in the sunshine!

Skylark class has been learning about coordinates in maths.

We designed and plotted a route on a grid, avoiding obstacles or collecting items on the way to the destination. We gave our routes different themes. Some of us chose Pokémon characters to catch; others chose coins to collect on the way to the bank, or aliens to avoid between planets. There were lots of other great ideas too. We wrote down our directions, selecting the most efficient route between points.

We then went outside and set up a large scale grid on the playground, plotting our points as accurately as we could, using props. We blindfolded and guided our group members around our grids, collecting and avoiding the necessary items, by describing the number of movements up, down, left and right. We had a lot of fun but it was trickier than we expected. We learnt the importance of spatial awareness and clear instructions as well as improving our knowledge of coordinates.

Year 3 Stone Age Day

On Thursday, Year 3 had an awesome Stone Age day.

We all came to school dressed up as cave people; with animal furs, bones and dirty faces! First, Freya from Squirrel class’ mum, Becky, came to speak to us all about Stone Age archaeology. She showed us very sharp arrows, pieces of flint and gave our class a special Stone Age book. Next, we became scavengers and collected natural materials from the woods. We used these to paint our Stone Age pictures. It was very difficult because the sticks and leaves were not like paintbrushes at all! Then, we became hunters. We found sticks we could use as spears and found out who could throw their spear the furthest. After lunch, our parents came into school. We did lots of different activities with them. We created cave paintings, and used clay to make Stone Age pots and houses. Also, we built Stone Age people and tools. We had a go at creating our own Stonehenge using junk modelling. We drew cave paintings on the wall and painted our hands, just like the people did in the Stone Age.

It was an amazing day; we had so much fun pretending we were Stone Age people!

Year 6 Tudor Life Project

Year 6 dressed up as Tudors as part of their class project. We had a great day taking part in Drama sessions and then made our own comic style presentations to depict Tudor times.

Year 5 Paultons Park Trip

Year 5 went to Paultons Park this half term. We were feeling very excited about going, however we were also feeling nervous about going on some of the rides! Firstly, we went to Professor Blast’s Learning Lab for a session about minibeasts and how they adapt to their habitats. We enjoyed learning about the Macleay stick insect which is very clever as it could disguise itself as a scorpion to avoid being eaten. We also learnt about the physics behind some of the rides in the park in the afternoon by using the interactive models that you can see in the pictures.

During the rest of the day we went on all the rides. Many of us enjoyed the Cobra because of the swerves and spins. We also enjoyed the Magma ride and seeing the new Dinosaur section of the park. Luckily we didn’t get too wet either! At the end of the day we went to the gift shop and got some souvenirs to remember the park.

We all had a great day as we had lots of fun as well as learning some interesting facts about Science!
