Year 1 - Awesome Art!

This term the children in Year 1 have been learning about different artists and their unique styles. They have then created their own artwork in that style.

The children used thin brushes and water colours to create the sunset scene behind the Birch trees.

The children were inspired by the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and Wassily Kandinsky. They particularly liked the style of Van Gogh and could talk about the way in which he put paint on the paper.

The children painted wheat fields and their interpretations of space in the style of Van Gogh.

Year 1 - Gurdwara Visit

Year 1 pupils visited the Gurdwara in Southampton as part of their Religious Education topic on special places.

In the Gurdwara they gave free food to all the visitors.

Year 5 - French Lesson

On 18th July 2017 year 5 had a french lesson on directions.

The task was to hide a rubber ring and then write a set of instructions in french for another group to find it. All four house groups worked co-operatively and all managed to eventually find a ring. The vocabulary was all new but they worked well to create a set of instructions and then to decipher them. Some rings were relatively easy to find but others were extremely well hidden!

Well done Year 5!

Year 5 - Planning a Sports Festival

As part of our “Shaping Up” topic this half term, Year 5 have been busy planning a sports festival based around some of the sports that feature at the Olympic Games.  Year 5 researched the history and the rules of different sports and wrote persuasive brochures and detailed sets of instructions to encourage others to try new sports that they might be less familiar with like Handball. They designed demonstration stations to model how to practice the techniques of the sport.

Year 5 invited Year 4 to the festival where they got to play the sports together and take part in small sided games. Everyone enjoyed themselves, learnt a lot and showed super co-operation skills!

She interviewed Jacob and asked him to carry out a series of timed tasks, including putting books into alphabetical order by the author’s surname, locating books on shelves using the Dewey system and searching for books on our electronic system. He did exceptionally well and demonstrated his passion for reading and showed great professionalism.

Year R - RE

This term Squirrels have been thinking about special clothes. Reverend Mike came in to show us the special clothes he wears at church. We also watched some Hindu weddings and then dressed up in Hindu special clothes. The children pretended to be at a Hindu wedding and enjoyed dancing to the Indian music. Some children made garlands to wear.

Later in the day the children noticed the bindis and made their own out of paper and sellotape.  They also made paper jewellery such as earrings and crowns.

Year 2 - Visit from an Artist

Carol Parsons came into Hedgehog class for an afternoon of art.

We looked at Carol’s beautiful paintings and she talked to us about how she loves to paint the sea. Carol showed us new painting techniques which we tried out together.

What a fantastic afternoon!

Year 2 - Outdoor Maths

We have been using our outdoor environment and natural resources to secure our maths learning.  We worked together and used natural objects to practise making fractions of amounts.

Well done Year 2!

Year 4 - Dragons' Den and Fiver Challenge

Skylarks class have been very busy with our Dragons’ Den topic. In maths we carried out some market research about popular board games. We then worked in groups to design and make our own ones.

We watched some clips from Dragons’ Den and we learnt a lot about setting up a business. We wrote some very persuasive sales pitches for our games, which we performed to the scary dragons! They were very impressed and made lots of investments!

We also took part in the Fiver Challenge, run by Young Enterprise. The challenge is to start with £5 and make as much profit as possible. As we had already made our own board games, we decided to host a board game café in the hall. We spent our £5 on squash, plastic cups and napkins and then we all went home and made our own delicious cakes, cookies and brownies to sell. We named our business ‘Game On’ and William and Reuben designed excellent logos for the competition. We put up some posters around the local area to advertise our event.

On Tuesday 27th June, we set up our board game café in the hall. We ran the whole thing ourselves, including working out the change for refreshments, and explaining the rules of our games to customers. It was an enormous success! Each class had an opportunity to come and play our games and buy drinks and snacks and then we opened up the café to parents and everyone else at the end of the day. We had lots of positive feedback and we managed to raise a whopping £231.12!

Thank you to everyone who came to support us, especially the parents who helped make cakes and those who gave up their time to help pack away all the tables at the end of a very long afternoon!

Well done Skylarks!
