Year 5 - St Swithun's Art

At St Swithun's we really enjoyed the first lesson which was making yourself out of paper. This let us show our personality and Mrs Ross (our teacher) enabled us to have more freedom to make it our own. We really appreciated the older students from St Swithun's who were there to help us throughout the lessons.

In the next lesson we started by sketching a picture of an important building in Winchester including the library, the cathedral and many more. After we had done a rough sketch of the building we were using, we collaged some of the main parts. This included windows and pillars using tissue paper and sugar paper.

The next lesson was about John Piper but first we added to our sketches by going over them in black pen first. Then we looked at the style of John Piper and found out that he drew buildings during the time of the War and identified the colours that were often merged to make sad colours. This enabled us to use the same colour scheme to improve our picture and they turned out to look very similar to his amazing art.

The last lesson started by watching Miss Ross giving an example of sketching a skyscraper and making it your own. The class enjoyed this lesson but were sad that it was the last.

Year 6 - Charles Darwin and Evolution

This term in Year 6 we have been learning about Charles Darwin and Evolution.

We carried out research to find out everything we could about his life, his theories and why his work is still relevant and influential today. We applied this understanding in our English lessons to write a biography of Charles Darwin covering all aspects of his early life, his voyages and discoveries and what motivated him throughout his life.

We especially enjoyed presenting and publishing our finished pieces of writing and we now have a clear understanding of all the different features of a good biography.

Year 5 - Design and Technology

In Year 5 we have been studying resistant materials in our Design and Technology lessons.

We started by thinking about what are the benefits and drawbacks of using different types of materials in a construction. We were then given a design brief that we had to follow which was to construct a type of shelter that would be waterproof. We also learnt about how to construct different joins with wood to make our structures strong and sturdy.

All of Year 5 really enjoyed this project and as you can see from the pictures we came up with some creative and original designs!
