Year 4 Outdoor Maths

Year 4 maths in the sunshine!

Skylark class has been learning about coordinates in maths.

We designed and plotted a route on a grid, avoiding obstacles or collecting items on the way to the destination. We gave our routes different themes. Some of us chose Pokémon characters to catch; others chose coins to collect on the way to the bank, or aliens to avoid between planets. There were lots of other great ideas too. We wrote down our directions, selecting the most efficient route between points.

We then went outside and set up a large scale grid on the playground, plotting our points as accurately as we could, using props. We blindfolded and guided our group members around our grids, collecting and avoiding the necessary items, by describing the number of movements up, down, left and right. We had a lot of fun but it was trickier than we expected. We learnt the importance of spatial awareness and clear instructions as well as improving our knowledge of coordinates.
