Year 5 - French Lesson

On 18th July 2017 year 5 had a french lesson on directions.

The task was to hide a rubber ring and then write a set of instructions in french for another group to find it. All four house groups worked co-operatively and all managed to eventually find a ring. The vocabulary was all new but they worked well to create a set of instructions and then to decipher them. Some rings were relatively easy to find but others were extremely well hidden!

Year 5 - Planning a Sports Festival

As part of our “Shaping Up” topic this half term, Year 5 have been busy planning a sports festival based around some of the sports that feature at the Olympic Games.  Year 5 researched the history and the rules of different sports and wrote persuasive brochures and detailed sets of instructions to encourage others to try new sports that they might be less familiar with like Handball. They designed demonstration stations to model how to practice the techniques of the sport.

Year 5 invited Year 4 to the festival where they got to play the sports together and take part in small sided games. Everyone enjoyed themselves, learnt a lot and showed super co-operation skills!

Year 5 - Pupil Librarian Award

SLS Highly Commended Pupil Librarian of the Year

Jacob Battison was voted by his fellow librarians to be entered into the SLS Pupil Librarian of the Year award. After completing an in depth application form, Jacob was shortlisted and a member of staff from the library service came to visit him. She interviewed Jacob and asked him to carry out a series of timed tasks, including putting books into alphabetical order by the author’s surname, locating books on shelves using the Dewey system and searching for books on our electronic system. He did exceptionally well and demonstrated his passion for reading and showed great professionalism.

Jacob was awarded a certificate of ‘Highly Commended’. Very well deserved - Well done, Jacob!

Year 5 - Ancient Greece

This Half Term Year 5 have been busy learning about Ancient Greece. We thought about what we would like to know about the Greeks and we compiled research questions. We wrote up our findings in the form of Information Texts to allow us to pass on our knowledge to other children. We thought what facts would be most engaging and interesting and we thought about what language and layout we would use to make them appeal to our audience.

Year 5 Paultons Park Trip

Year 5 went to Paultons Park this half term. We were feeling very excited about going, however we were also feeling nervous about going on some of the rides! Firstly, we went to Professor Blast’s Learning Lab for a session about minibeasts and how they adapt to their habitats. We enjoyed learning about the Macleay stick insect which is very clever as it could disguise itself as a scorpion to avoid being eaten. We also learnt about the physics behind some of the rides in the park in the afternoon by using the interactive models that you can see in the pictures.

During the rest of the day we went on all the rides. Many of us enjoyed the Cobra because of the swerves and spins. We also enjoyed the Magma ride and seeing the new Dinosaur section of the park. Luckily we didn’t get too wet either! At the end of the day we went to the gift shop and got some souvenirs to remember the park.

We all had a great day as we had lots of fun as well as learning some interesting facts about Science!

Year 5 - Maps

In Year 5 we have been looking at maps as part of our Geography and topic learning this half term.

We looked at the common features of Ordinance Survey maps including why symbols are used and how to use a key. We also enjoyed learning how to read a four figure grid reference.

As part of our programme of Outdoor Learning we went outside to create our own maps of Great Britain using outdoor equipment to show features and symbols. We even thought of a creative way to show the Isle of Wight- can you find it?

Autumn Term 2

As part of our “explorers and adventurers” topic, Year 5 looked at the art styles and techniques of the Aztec Indians. They used lots of geometric patterns in their art and also used representations and pictures from nature but they often drew them in a slightly square fashion. We looked at some examples and we recreated similar designs using pastels. What symbols from nature can you see in our designs?

Paragraph Writing

Year 5 have been learning about writing paragraphs and we would like to share some with you:

Olivers Battery is a school in Winchester, the teachers here are very kind.  All of the pupils enjoy the lessons and it goes from Year R to Year 6 just like most primary schools ! Children at Olivers Battery will get a good education and they will take life a step at a time. At Olivers Battery we like to celebrate, for example Christmas, Red Nose day and Easter !  Now I am going to tell you about the library.

 

At Oliver’s Battery we have an amazing library.  We have a librarian and also if you want to get a book out of your class we have pupil librarians who can help you get a book at break or lunch time.  Our library system is just like a real library we have names with barcodes then you scan the barcodes and you can take the book.

Oliver’s Battery is a caring environment with a school library, computer room and music room.  We have lots of classes and are happy to welcome children who want to become one of us.  Our school charter is most brilliant, it explains who we are.  I would like to mention the top one as it is who we are, it is “be proud”.  If you are looking to send your child here read on to find out more.

 

The grounds at Oliver’s Battery are huge.  We have 2 large fields that link together and into the woods.  We have 2 wonderful ponds which we sometimes do pond dipping in.  We love our wildlife – once Spring Watch came here for foxes and deer.

Oliver’s Battery is a big school with a library, two Key Stage areas and a central hall which backs onto the kitchen where we get our food.  We are very lucky to have a toy shed for lunchtimes and a full P.E. cupboard.  We are located in Winchester in a village called Oliver’s Battery so called because Oliver’s Battery is where Oliver Cromwell kept his guns and other weapons.  Also we have huge school grounds with two fields.

 

At Oliver’s Battery we do lots of sport that includes netball, a wide range of football.  In the summer there is basketball, cricket and tennis.  All this wonderful sport and P.E are organised by our P.E. teacher, Mrs Marshall who does one day a week for each class.  Also we are lucky enough to have Kings’ P.E teacher Mr Birch who teaches Year 5 and 6 on a Monday afternoon.

Year 5 Have Been Writing Their First Computer Game
